Het Oud Huis in de Kunsthal is een publieke ruimte dat een knooppunt voor bezoekers van hedendaagse kunst is. Net daarom is het een ruimte waarbinnen vrij bewegen zijn plaats heeft. Wanneer het verhaal van Jacem binnen het Oude Huis gebracht werd worden ook hier grenzen zichtbaar.

My experiences in the urban landscape, stories of the people I met, photographs, maps, drawings as well as internet links to audio and video fragments are compiled into a publication. My views on society and on my artistry have their place there, layered in quotes as well as in reflective essays. This publication, ‘newspaper’, frames my nomadic process and is grafted on ‘desire lines’ in the form of a handout for the people that I meet during my interventions.

I experience the echo of the colonial past louder and louder when leaving the paved paths, just like voices that are carried by a wind. Curious, I allow myself to be carried away, stepping past erected walls so high that only the tower crane comes out of it.

Tijdens de actie ‘desire lines’ aan de ferry terminal in Calais stuitte Maarten op de woorden ‘I wish for the future’, neergeschreven op een vangrail aan het einde van een doodlopende straat. Deze woorden brengt hij binnen in een ruimte tijdens een volgende actie in de gebouwen van het voormalig Koninklijk Technisch Atheneum aan de Lindenlei in Gent, voor de expo ‘The Act Of Staring At The Sun’
